Bake Sale Peek

It’s finally time to share some of the great shots I took during the Bark & Bite Community Bake Sale! First, though, I’m thrilled to announce that the sale raised over $500 for FurKids. I hope that our donation will help them during these times when people are having to cut back on giving, and help them keep up the amazing work they do for our community. The support that we received for the bake sale was just wonderful – donations of time, energy and yummy treats were all so very much appreciated! We had items from The Little Cake Bakery, Chocolate Pink Cafe, Taj Mahound, Alon’s Bakery, Swoozie’s, and Piece of Cake, as well as many many delicious home-made goodies. Thank you to all who donated and to all who came out to join us last weekend! Here are some highlights from the day.

BS-1

My poor kitty had to suffer through watching me make batches of home baked kitty treats all day on Friday! Of course, he also had the very important job of taste testing. He reminded me of myself when I make cake or cookies… constantly sneaking tastes of the batter. I think he approved of the treats!

BS-2

Some shots of our delicious donations – dog cookies from Taj Mahound at left, and cupcakes from Little Cake Bakery at right. It’s a little hard to tell the people treats from the dog treats…

BS-3

Happily we had lots of four-legged visitors to our bake sale. I did my best to get shots of as many of them as possible in between packing up customers’ purchases. I love the eyelashes on this pooch!

BS-4

If there is one customer for whom a bake sale is especially exciting, it’s a kid! Are those shades the super-coolest or what. And if you look really closely, you’ll see just what this guy had in his sights amongst all those delicacies…

BS-5

The classics. Home-made chocolate chip cookies. Good choice, Albert.

BS-6

BS-7

I did my best to capture this unlikely duo together while I could – they were pretty into their Taj Mahound goodies. But I loved watching the two of them together. This is what inspires me about dogs – they had absolutely no sense of the immense differences between them! Just best of buds.

BS-8

Look at my dad soaking up some puppy love… you can see where I get my love of animals! How could he resist from that adorable face?

BS-9

We saw a lot of this at the sale – with treats galore, it’s no surprise! That look on the right is one good “please, mommy…?!” puppy dog look if I ever saw one.

BS-10

As if there wasn’t already a cuteness overload on hand Saturday, Samantha, the founder and director of FurKids, was able to stop by the sale with her new baby girl! Rosy cheeks like this will melt the hardest of hearts, I assure you. Not to mention those lashes.

BS-11

BS-12

But mainly it was babies of the furry variety that day, and they were all as adorable as any pet photographer could hope. Thanks to the people who let their pets bring them to the sale! If you’d like to see all of the images from the day, click on “info” in the menu bar above. Scroll down to “the proofs” and then click on “bake sale”. You can browse through all of the proofs and, if you see an image of your pet that you’d like to order, feel free to email me with the image number (they are listed on the bottom left corner of the proofs screen)! I’ll get back to you with more info on how to order.

One more big thank you to all who helped make the bake sale a success! Please stay tuned to our blogsite for info on the next upcoming charity event that SSP will be taking part in, PBR for Pups. Hope you all have a great Father’s Day weekend!

Bark & Bite Community Bake Sale

I am proud and excited to announce an event that will hopefully be a fun day filled with some of my favorite things…Pets, Atlanta Summer days, and Sweets! I’m speaking of the Bark & Bite Community Bake Sale, a fundraiser for FurKids taking place in June. FurKids is an amazing organization that you’ve read about before if you’ve been checking in on our blog for awhile. This is a chance to really raise some good money for them so please come out and get involved however you can! Here’s how you can help:

  • Bake something! We’re in need of donated baked goods for both people and pets – yes, that’s right, we’re looking for homemade dog & cat treats as well as cupcakes, cookies, brownies, muffins, bread…
  • Solicit your favorite Bakeries! If you know someone who works at, owns, or otherwise has leverage at any of your favorite Atlanta bakeries, we’d love it if they would donate some of their baked goods to our event. This gives patrons even more scrumptiousness to choose from and gives our event a special community feel.
  • Promote the event! If you know of a great place to hang or pass out flyers and promote the bake sale please let us know. We want as many visitors as possible so we can raise as much money for FurKids as possible.
  • Treat Yourself! Come to the bake sale on June 13th and buy yourself and your pets a treat. They will all be budget friendly and certainly delicious!

If you’re willing and able to help us out in any of the above ways (or any other ways you can think of!) please contact me via phone or email at any time. I hope to see you at the Bake Sale!

p.s. We’ll also have a raffle for a Free SSP Pets! Photo shoot at the bake sale so this is a great opportunity to get those furry kids of yours the portraits they deserve.

Dudley – Sneek Peek

I know a new post is LOOOONG overdue, but all I can say is I think, truly truly think, that the cuteness overload you are about to witness will help make up for that! This is Dudley, a one and a half year old King Charles whose sweet, loving personality won me over the second I met him! His mom, Kate, is getting married this summer (congratulations Kate and Rob!!!!) and since all the attention will soon be on her, we thought it only fitting to give Dudley a little time in the spotlight. He was an absolute joy to work with and I am so enamored with him that I may go a little bit overboard here. So forgive me if this gets a bit long. But I don’t think you’ll mind!

dudley_1

My Stick. Mine.

These next few are all similar, but the way Dudley was just gazing into the camera’s eyes, I couldn’t stop shooting…and I couldn’t choose! He’s so expressive. And that smile…

I love Dudley’s fun, long coat. He just had a bath the day before our shoot and it showed! Look at that shiny red hair…

Dudley likes to high-five his mom.

These paws are just way too cute! Like little dusters at the end of his little legs.

dudley_14

These next two are my favorite kind of photos. I feel like these really capture the essence and spirit of the pet, without being a portrait in the traditional sense. These are the kinds of photos that I personally love to hang in my home. Photos that just “feel” like your pet – and these, to me, truly “feel” like Dudley and the end of our fun filled warm sunny afternoon together.

dudley_15

I heart Dudley very very much!!!

Stay tuned for news about what else SSP has been up to, including information about the Bark & Bite Community Bake Sale to benefit FurKids… Coming Soon!

Kitty’s New Playground and Digital Tintypes

Well Spring feels closer and more promising than ever today, the first full day of Daylight Savings. I love this time of year. It seems as though Mother Nature herself is beckoning to us to cheer up, shake off the winter blahs and get moving again. In that spirit, I’m posting some images of Cat exploring his new territory – our new apartment, that is! AND, in case you didn’t notice, there have been some changes (again!) here on the blog as well. This begins the transition to the new blogsite – the website and blog all rolled into one. Within the next couple of weeks everything should be complete, and you’ll be able to view a portfolio, read about pages, and more – everything you’d expect from a portfolio website, with the convenience of having the blog right on the home page. But now back to Kitty…

These were taken on Painting Day, the first day Cat got to experience the screen doors. This is new for him, and of course, he LOVES it! Now he’ll sit by the closed door and meow and meow until I open it and let him look out the screen for just a few minutes! On the right, Cat in plastic drop cloth. Quite a nice diffuser, I have to say!

new_apt_11

These next few were shot the other night while I was experimenting with flash and my new Gary Fong lightsphere. I will freely admit that I am a natural light junkie – I shoot almost exclusively in natural light. My good friend and fellow photographer Tom Blakely, who makes beautiful studio and location fashion shots will back me up on this and gladly recount stories of our college days when he would “help” me with my studio lighting homework! So I feel that I need to constantly force myself to practice with flash more and more so that if need be, I can still provide my clients with beautiful shots with flash. This particular evening, however, it was pretty much 100% dark when I started shooting, which makes it almost impossible to produce the nice, pretty colors I’m used to in daylight! So we created some fun black and white and some actually quite nice desaturated black and white shots!

new_apt_21

Cat doesn’t like flash much more than I do… He looks so mean here! He’s really not at all mean, I swear… But I think I have my Halloween cards for next year!

new_apt_31

new_apt_41

new_apt_51

So if Kitty thought that the screen DOOR was good, you can imagine his delight on Saturday, our first really nice warm day of the year, when he discovered… the SCREEN PORCH!!!! At first for some reason he was actually a bit scared to come out and explore. But once he did…. It was bugs and birds and squirrels galore! And it just so happened that there was already the perfect little perch for him to look out the window from.

new_apt_61

Now, once he got really comfortable out there, came the most fun part of all. Cat, in a completely out of character move, found the dirtiest spot on the porch, filled with dust and pollen and dirt that hadn’t yet been hosed down or swept away… and rolled. And rolled and rolled and rolled….

new_apt_71

Scrappy dirty little boy!

new_apt_81

Then it was bathtime!!!!

………………………………………………………..

My other project for the weekend was to go take the Man’s Best Friends show down. It was sad to see them leave the bar, as they looked so very at home there! But I’m glad to have them here as well, so I can share with you all what the Digital Tintype is all about! These are fantastic pieces that can be made completely custom. The photos are printed on a fine art metal digital photo paper. The paper has a semi-gloss finish which shows silvery from some angles and gold from others. They have a real vintage feel, and create especially dramatic and timeless pieces from black and white, high contrast photos.

new_apt_101

The prints are hand mounted onto foam core and then mounted again onto hand made backing boards. Here, they are coated in a high gloss black paint. However, the boards can be finished any way the client chooses – stained, painted in any color to match your decor, polyurethane for a really slick modern finish – any number of finishes are available to make these pieces really one of a kind. These are not just your ordinary framed matted prints… they are truly something special that will look distinguished and dramatic in any home. These photos can’t quite do them the justice they deserve so please give me a call or drop me an email with any questions about Digital Tintypes!

new_apt_91

I hope you are all enjoying beautiful weather and an extra hour of daylight as much as I am. Get outside!

Chicago, My Home Town

As some of you know, although I have lots of love in my heart for Atlanta, my real home town is Chicago. Since the launch of the new SSP Pets blog, I have had lots and lots of feedback from friends and family in Chicago, and friends of friends and family in Chicago, asking me when I’ll be in town next and if I’ll have time to do some photo shoots while I’m there. My answer is, I’m not sure, but definitely yes! I wanted to write a post to invite anyone in the Chicago area to send me an email if you’re interested in booking a shoot for sometime this summer. I’ll get back to you with a simple form to fill out to give me some basic information on you and when you’re available to do a shoot. This way I can make sure that I can book as many pups and kitties as possible! I’ll keep you posted on plans for the trip as they develop.

See you in the Windy City!

Macromutt.com

About a week ago I had the pleasure of discovering a fantastic little blog called MacroMutt. It’s a blog just for photos of dogs! There are so many talented photographers out there and I’m proud to say that as of today I am lucky enough to have a photo amongst them. If you like looking at adorable photos of pups, this is a great place to visit. Each day you’ll find a brand new photo to drool over! Please check them out here and take a look at SSP’s post! Thanks MacroMutt!

Keep up with us in the coming weeks for photos of SSP’s new “headquarters” (i.e. apartment!) and an account of how Cat is settling in, a feature on our Digital Tintypes, and more!

Man’s Best Friends {the images}

They’re here! The long-awaited final images from Man’s Best Friends. I hope you enjoy them! Thank you so much to everyone who came out to Steinbeck’s for the opening – your support and presence were so much appreciated! And also, thank you to the wonderful people over at Steinbeck’s for all of your hard work in making the evening so fabulous. The food was delicious, the drinks were refreshing, the company was inspiring, and the location was enchanting! You are all wonderful! IF you live in the Atlanta area and weren’t able to come out on Thursday, please stop by Steinbeck’s sometime between now and February 28th to catch the show and enjoy this incredible well-kept secret of Decatur. And while you’re there get something delicious for your better four legs at Taj Mahound right down the street… Thanks Krista for the party favors!

Ok ok, this is not the Grammy’s. Let’s get to the PHOTOS! These final images were all printed individually as Digital Tintypes. I’m going to have a special post once the pieces come down with photos of the final product to show you – these are super cool, unique art pieces and I can’t wait to make some of my Cat for my own home! They’re all hand-made and totally customizable, and I hope they become sort of a trade-mark product for SSP. So the images on their own, although I am thrilled with them, for me lack a bit of that final “oomph” that the real-life prints had. Yes, in SSP land, oomph is a word. You catch my drift, yes?

I hope that even my online-only viewers will take some time and really look at the human qualities of these little guys and girls with their brews – for me, there was something about seeing these canines with their oh-so-common of human props that brought out their personalities in such a big way. Is it any wonder we love these pals so much?

Maybe next time I’ll have to do kitties…. Yes, kitties with martinis perhaps….
